The Book of Ruth

Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

Ruth 1: 16

The Book of Ruth contains a beautiful example of filial piety, pleasing to the Hebrews especially because of its connection with King David, and useful both to the Hebrews and to Gentiles. There is no certainty about the author of the book and it is thought to have taken place in the time of the “judges.” Its aim is to demonstrate the divine reward for such piety even when practiced by a stranger. Ruth’s piety, her spirit of self-sacrifice, and her moral integrity were favored by God with the gift of faith and an illustrious marriage to Boaz whereby she became the ancestress of David and of Christ. In this the universality of the messianic salvation is foreshadowed.

Ruth was a Moabite woman who upon the death of her spouse decided to return with her mother-in-law, Naomi from the Moab plateau to Bethlehem. Ruth insisted on leaving her family and accompanying Naomi on her return to Bethlehem. “Do not ask me to abandon or forsake you, for wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge, your people shall be my people, and your God my God” (V.16).
