The Presentation in the Temple

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

Luke 2:22

The fourth joyful mystery of the Holy Rosary, a chronical of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the “presentation in the temple.” Joseph and Mary bring the infant Jesus into the temple, the dwelling place of the Lord, fulfilling the prophecy that the glory of Yahweh would return to the temple. Bishop Robert Barron explains in the 2023 Advent Gospel Reflections the importance of this mystery is rooted in the significance of the temple for ancient Israel. The temple was the dwelling place of the Lord! Whenever someone offered sacrifice in the temple, he/she was becoming “reconciled” with the Lord.

But the sins of the nation had, according to the prophet Ezekiel, caused the glory of the Lord to depart from the temple. One of the deepest aspirations of Israel’s people was to reestablish the temple as the place of right praise so that the glory of the Lord might return. We hear this longing in the prophets, the Psalms, and in the communities like the Essenes.

When Joseph and Mary bring the infant Jesus into the temple, we are drawn to appreciate the prophecy of Ezekiel being fulfilled. The glory of the Lord has returned to His temple.

All for the glory of God!
