The Word of Jesus Was Enough

John 4:48 Daily Devotion Scripture

“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe. — John 4:48

Merriam-Webster defines desperation as loss of hope and surrender to despair. One of the reasons we want to believe on something is desperation.

Desperation can serve as a reminder of our limitations; that we are powerless over anything without God. In John 4:42-54, an official went to Jesus and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death (v. 47). The father had no other options, so he turned to Jesus in desperation. In the official’s despair, he surrendered his son’s condition to Jesus, and he believed in Jesus’ ability to heal his son. The officer took Jesus at His word and departed. Even if he lacked proof, the word of Jesus was enough for him.

Do we trust in Jesus because we are desperate or because He is sufficient? Do we require Jesus because He is the answer to our problems? May we seek Jesus out of a desire to be in personal relationship with him rather than out of a desire to gain something from him.

Jesus is enough for me.
