To Become Foolish In Order To Become Wise

1 Corinthians 3:18-19 Devotion

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. For the wisdom if this world is foolishness in God’s sight. 1 Corinthians 3:18-19

Who wants to be called a fool? We would prefer to be known as wise rather than as fools. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul instructs them to become foolish in order to become wise. What is Paul saying?

By the standards of their time, the Corinthians considered themselves wise. It means they value worldly knowledge. Paul went on to say that the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s eyes. We will never be able to truly be filled with God’s wisdom unless we are willing to be considered fools in human wisdom.

This world’s wisdom is fleeting, selfish, and untrustworthy. But the Lord’s wisdom is divine, never fails, and works for a greater good. How can we attain God’s wisdom? James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” We can pursue wisdom by seeking God in prayer and in His Word. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple (Psalm 19:7).

Lord, help me desire more of you.
