You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. – Colossians 3:7-8

Read Colossians 3:1-17

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. In these, you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: ranger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth (v. 2, 5, 7). Who among you would agree that all these are easier said than done? After receiving Jesus in our life, our transformation does not happen overnight.

I remember my daughter asking me why does she keep on doing the things she knows she shouldn’t be doing such as lying or disobedience. When she asked that, she was feeling frustrated because she knows very well that what she did was wrong but she still did it. I believe kids are not the only ones who experience this. Even Paul said in Romans 7:15, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”

Is there still hope? Can we still change and be who God wants us to be? How? Apart from God, we can do nothing. The first step is to seek a deeper relationship with God by reading and meditating on His Word, talking to Him through prayer, giving God the full authority to change us, and always reminding ourselves that we are already set free. Because of the blood of Jesus, we now have our freedom; we are not slaves of sin anymore. It is God who does the work of making us more like Jesus through the Holy Spirit that dwells in us. All we have to do is to participate by doing our part.

Are you ready to be transformed?

Lord, help me in my weakness. Help me walk in your power to say no to sin.
