Use Your God Given Talents

But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Matthew 25:29

Recently at mass Father Gerry gave a great homily on the talent parable in Mathew’s Gospel. He explained that a talent was a measure of approximately 60 pounds of silver. As the parable goes, the master gave 5, 2, and 1 talent to three servants. The servants that were given the 5 and 2 talents doubled their investment while the servant receiving 1 talent dug a hole in the ground and buried his master’s money. The master was pleased with the first two servants and since they were faithful in small matters, the master gave them greater responsibilities.

In the Jewish culture to bury anything meant you washed your hands of the item and were not responsible for it anymore. This is why the master was so upset and said, “but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And he threw the useless servant into the dark outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth (VV29-30). When God blesses you with a talent or a gift, he expects you to use it to build His kingdom and for His glory.

Don’t be the useless servant-serve God by your talents!
