We Will Keep the Covenant of Our Fathers

We will not obey the words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree.

1 Maccabees 2:22

The Maccabees were a priestly family of the Jews mounting a successful rebellion against King Antiochus. Mattathias one of the leaders rebuked an officer of the King to join the apostasy with offers of silver, gold and many gifts. Mattathias answered in a loud voice: “Although all the Gentiles in the king’s realm obey him, so that each forsakes the religion of his fathers and consents to the king’s orders, yet I and my sons and my kin will keep to the covenant of our fathers. God forbid that we should forsake the law and the commandments. We will not obey the words of the king nor depart from our religion in the slightest degree” (VV. 19-22).

Through the Maccabees obedience to God, they recaptured and rededicated the Temple which is commemorated to this day in the Jewish feast of Hanukkah. Asi Mattathias determined in his heart to stand by God and God’s ways in the face of severe opposition, we too, can be just as determined to stand in the gap with God. Choose to love and forgive. Choose to love your enemies. Choose to reconcile with God and others.

Lord, I love your ways!
