What Is This?

We know the grumbled that took place against Moses and Aaron as the Jews were wandering in the desert. Certainly, there was not a strong show of gratitude for leading them out of exile and into the promised land. So, the Lord said to Moses, “I will now rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. On the sixth day, however, when they prepare what they bring in, let it be twice as much as they gather on the other days” (V.4-5).

What is not obvious in translation is that we might think that the word “manna” is Hebrew for “bread from heaven.” Yet is simply means “what is this?” The joke? That’s probably what the Israelites said when this miracle food first appeared-what is this? And the word stuck. Soon the Jews realized manna was God’s wondrous provision for their desert journey and became a central sign of his love and compassion. So much so that they preserved the manna, along with the Ten Commandments in the ark of the covenant (32-34).

This is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.
Exodus 16:15

This a sign of God’s goodness and providence!
