May All God’s People Be Prophets

Would that the Lord might bestow his spirit on them all!

Numbers 11:29

Moses and Joshua lead the Israelites on their journey away from the wilderness of Sina and toward the promised land. The Israelites had witnessed God descending on the mountain and had received the law. The Lord dispersed the prophetic spirit on Moses and seventy elders. The spirit also came to rest on two elders who stayed in camp, Eldad and Medad, and they prophesied in camp.

When Joshua learned that these two elders were prophesying in the camp, he said to Moses, “Moses, my lord, stop them.” Moses responded, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets! Would that the Lord bestow his spirit on them all.” Moses’ response foreshadowed Jesus’ response to the disciples when His disciples complained of a man driving out demons. Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”
