Immaculate Conception
I am the Lord’s servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:38
A few weeks ago we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In the Little Blue Book Advent and Christmas 2024-2025, The Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Mary, not Jesus. It expresses the doctrine that from the first moment of her existence, Mary was free from original sin. There is a refrain that would be helpful whenever we think about Mary: “what she is, we are called to be.”
We can’t claim to have been “full of grace” from the very moment of our existence. But Jesus is our Savior too. Mary doesn’t differ from us because she received this grace. She differs because of when she received it-at her conception. We received it when we were baptized. From the beginning she was what we are called to be: sinless. I wasn’t created to be a sinner. I was created in the image of God.
What Mary is, we are called to be!
