A House of Prayer

Today’s Daily Devotion

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

The Temple Mount was the largest worship space in the ancient world during the time of Jesus. This magnificent house was covered in gold plating and surrounded by impressive stone plazas and colonnades.

My house shall be a house of prayer.
Luke 19:46

Truly this was a magnificent house worthy of the God of Israel. Jesus loved the Temple and celebrated Passover there annually. And yes, we know that he drove out the money changers and upset their tables declaring it a “House of Prayer.”

For Jesus, the Temple wasn’t just an impressive worship space, it was the dwelling place of his Father-it was his house! Jesus did not love everything about the Temple. The intricate stonework did not impress him and he was saddened by the presence of the merchant’s prioritizing greed over God’s word. Then and now Jesus desires his house to be filled with the Holy Spirit to produce good fruit in people’s lives.
