Boldness in Faith

May I receive a double portion of your spirit?

2 Kings 2:9

God chose Elijah to mentor Elisha. When it was time for Elijah to be taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elisha would not leave his side. “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you,” Elisha replied (V.4). As they were walking to the Jordan River with fifty guild prophets they stopped at the edge of the river. Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up and struck the water; dividing the river allowing them to cross over on dry ground. Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of your spirit” (VV.9-10)?

As they were conversing, a flaming chariot and horses came between them taking Elijah to heaven in a whirlwind. Elijah, then tore his own garment in two, then he picked up Elijah’s mantle and returned to the Jordan River. Wielding Elijah’s mantle he said, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah? When Elisha struck the water it divided and he crossed over” (VV. 13-14).
