Filled with the Twofold Portion of His Spirit

Nothing was beyond his power; beneath him flesh was brought back into life.

Sirach 48:13

Chapter 48 in the Book of Sirach is a testimony and praise to the mighty deeds of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. One could sum up Elijah’s work as “famine, fury, and fire.” Elisha bones brought back to life a dead man from his grave. “But when the man came in contact with the bones of Elisha, he came back to life and rose to his feet” (2 Kings 13:21).

Elijah and Elisha were prophets of word and action. They were empowered by God to do all those things in his name. God gave them every grace and favor to accomplish his prophecies and bring great glory to God. We, too, may obtain every grace and favor from God. How? We need only ask, in prayer. Like Elijah and Elisha, we can do nothing without God. Our words and actions ought to reflect God’s desires and his glory. So may our own habits of prayer help us to grow in this area, and to rely ever more on God who loves us.
