Silence is the Classroom Where We Hear the Words of God

By Dr. George J. Ceremuga

The prophet Elijah is fearing for his life. At the mountain of God, Horeb, he came to a cave where he took shelter. When all seems lost, he hears the voice of God, not in a mighty wind, earthquake, or fire but in a gentle breeze.

After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
1 Kings 19:12

Elijah learned the value of silence, quietness, and gentleness. When waiting to meet his Lord, Elijah realized that God was not in the strong wind and the earthquake nor in the fire. He found God in the gentle voice.

Perhaps if Elijah had been talking, he would not have heard the gentle voice. So, after hearing this voice, he hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. Silence is the classroom where we hear the word of the Lord.

Silence is the language of God.
