Our Worth

Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now.” —Genesis 29:32

Read: Genesis 9: 31-35

I believe we all want to belong. Belongingness is a human emotional yearning to identify with and be accepted by members of a group. It’s all about getting other people’s acceptance, attention, and support. We all want to fit in and be good enough to be accepted, but sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t seem to live up to their expectations.

In the past, it is common to have more than one wife. In Leah’s case, Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. She is well aware of the situation. Because God saw how unloved Leah was by Jacob, He blessed him with many children. Leah, on the other hand, was unconcerned about the fact that the Lord recognized her worth and blessed her. She continued to seek her husband’s affection and acceptance. She based her self-worth on Jacob’s view of her.

Finding our actual worth in what other people think of us can never satisfy us. God and how He defines our worth are the only places where we can achieve true satisfaction. We’ll never realize the joy God wants us to have in His presence if we continue to concentrate our value on other people’s acceptance or love. Leah eventually realized how much the Lord valued her, and she thanked God for it. May we choose to concentrate on God and His unconditional love for us.

Only God can provide us with the sense of worth that we require.
