An Everlasting Covenant

Ezekiel 16 is a poetic description of Israel’s history, divided into three parts. First, there’s the story of an abandoned, unloved, and outcast girl. The king found the girl and gave her life. The girl grew larger, stronger, and more mature while under his care (v. 1-7). God is the king who discovered the girl, who is Israel.

The king then made him his queen. He made a promise to her and formed a covenant with her. Her royalty, renown, and beauty were entirely the result of the king’s efforts (v. 8-14).

The last phase is the queen’s infidelity, despite the king’s compassion and generosity. Her infidelity has in no way justifies any human punishment of adultery. Her actions have brought upon the just punishment of God (v. 15-58).

Nonetheless, the story concludes with a lovely promise. God would not forget His covenant with Israel, despite the certainty of the impending judgment. He promised to make a new covenant with them by atoning for everything they had done. He foreshadowed what was to come: Jesus Christ. Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise of Israel’s true and ultimate restoration.

Remember that nothing, not even our past or future sins, can separate us from God’s love. Through Jesus Christ, we have an everlasting covenant with God. He extends it to all of us and waits for us to enter the covenant with Him.

Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.
Ezekiel 16:60 NIV

Let us come back to our Father.
