Our Great Commission

Read Matthew 28:16-20

Matthew specifically noted the number of disciples who went to the mountain in Galilee, which Jesus had directed them to go to. “Twelve” used to become a magic number of the disciples. However, because of the decision one of them made, they were down to eleven. And perhaps the remaining disciples are excited, in shock, or confused about the good news that Jesus has risen from the grave. Whatever might have been in the minds of the disciples while on their way to the Galilee has been replaced with worship the moment they saw Jesus. Yet, Matthew, in his careful observation, also wrote that some still doubted.

We doubt when something is too good to be true. We doubt because life is full of the unknown. Jesus’ resurrection is not something common that happens day-to-day, perhaps that is why other followers of Jesus during that time still doubted. If those who lived during the time of Jesus, who saw His miracles and heard His teachings still doubted, what more those who lived in other nations or in the years after? What more our generation today and the generations to come? That is why the great commission is to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age (v. 19-20).”
