One Step at a Time​

In every path, there is always the first step to take, followed by another step. How often it is that we want to take a shortcut to skip several steps that will lead us to where we want to be, thinking that as long as the result is still the same, the number of steps to get there won’t matter that much? Eugene Peterson wrote in his book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society, “Everyone wants to be happy, to be blessed. Too many people are willfully refusing to pay attention to the One who wills our happiness and ignorantly supposing that the Christian way is a harder way to get what they want than doing it on their own. They are wrong. God’s ways and God’s presence are where we experience the happiness that lasts.”

When we are going through a very tough and dry season, sometimes we ask God to get us out of that season right away. Who would love pain and hardships, anyway? But in every season, God is leading us step by step. God perfectly places us on the step we are now and wants us to take each step that He gives us. In every step, God is molding our character, preparing us, strengthening us, and revealing Himself to us for the succeeding steps. We can always trust God for though we stumble, we will never fall, for our Lord God holds us by hand.
