Throughout Ecclesiastes, the author laments over the vanity of vanities and the purpose and value of human life. Life is an enigma beyond human ability to solve.
True wisdom is not found “under the sun” but is perceived only by the light of faith as it rests with God, who is the final judge of the good and the bad, and whose reign endures forever. The author recognizes that “there is nothing better than to be glad and to do well during life. Whatever God does will endure forever (V 12 and 14).”
“Any man to whom God gives riches and property, and grants power to partake of them, so that he receives his lot and finds joy in the fruits of his toil, has a gift from God” (5:18). Success and failure are both temporary. Do we feel entitled or empowered to live life for the glory of God. This matters in how we acknowledge the gift of life. The glory of God is man/woman fully alive in mind, body, and spirit.
