The Beauty of Unity

Psalm 133 begins with an invitation to “behold” in some translations. This word implies to pay attention because what follows is significant and demands our attention—unity among God’s people. And unity is good and pleasant. Why is it beneficial and pleasurable to live in harmony?

It’s good since God’s heart, and goal for His creation is unity. Ephesians 1:9-10 says, “he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.” It’s also pleasant since life will be lot more peaceful and enjoyable if everyone lives in unity. There will be no haters or bashers, simply people who love, respect, and support one another.

Not all that is good is pleasant, and not all pleasant is good. Hence, unity among the people of God is a beautiful blessing because it is both good and pleasant.
