God’s Ways First

Read Deuteronomy 6: 4-12

What matters most to you as a parent?

God called us to be parents, not to provide material goods for our children, but to teach them God’s Word. We must first have this big command in our hearts. Then it must be imparted to our children, and it must constantly be in front of us – as close as our hand or our forehead, as always before us as our doorposts and gates. It is admirable to offer the finest for our children; yet, we must recognize which is more vital. We are to provide our children with what they require rather than what they desire. It is never an option to teach our children about God and His commands.

Our job as parents isn’t merely to be God’s conduit for our children’s needs. He charged us with faithfully teaching His Word to our children and instilling God’s Word in their hearts and thoughts. We should not wait for the world to teach children its ways; we must teach them God’s ways first. Our aim is to raise our children in the direction they should go so that they do not stray when they grow up (Proverbs 22:6). Teaching our children about God and His commands is a huge investment.
